In a recent interview with Variety, Bill Hader explained that while working on the fourth season with the writing team, a clear ending for the series presented itself.

However, he did not want to rush the conclusion of the show and decided to break the news last year, as they began filming for season four.

Hader revealed that he told HBO's vice president of comedy programming, Amy Gravitt, that the show naturally comes to an end with the fourth season.
