David Crosby, one of the most influential rock singers of the 1960s and '70s has died at the age of 81.

The death came as a surprise to those who followed his very active Twitter account, which he tweeted as recently as Wednesday.

One of Crosby's last tweets on the day before he died was a typically witty comment about heaven: "I heard the place is overrated...cloudy."

Graham Nash, who has been estranged from Crosby in recent years after their group split, paid tribute on his social media.

“It is with a deep and profound sadness that I learned that my friend David Crosby has passed,” Nash wrote.

8 months ago, Crosby made headlines when he announced he was done performing live.

“I’m too old to do it anymore. I don’t have the stamina; I don’t have the strength” he said.

Crosby reentered the public consciousness in 2019 with a theatrical documentary, “David Crosby: Remember My Name”

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times as a member of Byrds (1991) and Crosby, Stills & Nash (1997).

Crosby was the son of cinematographer Floyd Crosby, who won an Oscar for "Tabu" feature in 1931.
